Meet The Herd...

Why Do We Keep Guernsey Cows?

Guernsey cows are known for their docile and friendly nature. Rather than trample you to death, they want to lick you to death! They don't produce as much milk as other breeds do but they make up for it in the creaminess of their milk, quality not quantity.  Other dairy breeds typically have butterfat of 3.5% whilst our Guernseys are up at 5.5% - that's the secret to making the most delicious ice cream.

Happy cows produce more and better quality milk. A scientific study has shown that if you name a cow and treat her as an individual she will produce 500 pints more milk a year.

Their welfare is crucial to our business, and we do everything to make our girls happy.

We are one of the only herds of pedigree Guernseys in the UK with over 200 cows currently producing our lovely milk. Managing a pedigree herd takes skill, time and lots of effort and we have a dedicated team that specialises in the three stages of looking after the herd.

Say Hi to our Farmer Phill!

Our Guernseys are taken care of by Phill Carlisle and his team based at Thornton Lodge, Finghall. Phill has many years experience of farming and is very focused on ensuring our Guernseys receive the very best care, food and attention at all times.

Guernsey Cows need a little more attention than some other breeds, particularly when they are starting out, so we house our calves at Brymor - keeping them tucked up in a cosy barn until the warmth of Spring when they can graze on our pasture here at the farm.

The calf shed can be viewed by the public from the indoor play area, call in and see the calves and make it a part of your visit to the Parlour?

You may be lucky enough to see our Guernsey Girls grazing in the meadow as you approach the Parlour from the main road.

Show Success

This Summer our Guernsey Girls 'Chloe' and 'Flo' have been super busy attending local shows across the region. The girls have been impeccably well turned out at every event, and are always on their very best behaviour. This season the girls have won a total of nine prizes, and four of them were in the top two places! A big well done to our Guernsey Girls, not forgetting our resident 'Cow Girl' Rosie Grant, for all her hard work and dedication to our girls.

A new menu and new ice cream flavours for Spring 2019!

We've been thrilled to work with Stephanie Moon, one of the region's top food consultants, to help us make the most of our own lovely Guernsey milk and ice cream as well as bring in exciting local produce.  We now serve hot food all day every day so whether it's a breakfast at 3pm or ice cream at 10am, the choice is yours.

We use Rogers of Masham for all our meat so an all day breakfast of local bacon and sausages is made extra special and we now have the most amazing porridge, made super creamy with Brymor milk.

You will be spoilt for choice with our all day grazing menu.  Whether it's ham eggs and chips, a mac and cheese made with Fountain's Gold or just a fruity scone and pot of tea, it might be hard to decide!

For ice cream lovers, the amazing choice of flavours gets better with the addition of three new flavours coming this Spring. Mootezer is a cheeky take on the famous malty chocolate sweet, Lemon-ness is a tart and fruity summer flavour and Cookie Dough is glorious rubbly chocolate dough mixed through our amazing traditional ice cream.

Call in and see us and experience carefully made and thoughtfully served food in the wonderful surroundings of our Parlour and Cafe here at High Jervaulx Farm.
